Making a case window
Ok, so you’ve got 5 cold cathodes in your computer, water cooling on your CPU and your GFX as well, cabling that makes God proud and the LAN party motherboard! But you haven’t got a window in your case so all of that means NOTHING! So this is how you make your own window.
Tools: -
Safety Glasses
Masking Tape and strong tape
Black Pen and pencil
Clamps (2 or 3)
Drill
Some kind of normal glue
Jigsaw – with METAL bit in
Sandpaper – 400 grain will do
Edging Material – you can buy this stuff online
Plexi Glass – get it from your local hardware store – 1/4inch think if
you can get it
Silicon Glue – how you attach your window to your case
Velcro – another way off attaching your window to your computer case
Ok down to the fun stuff now
Get the side of your case and mark out in pencil first the design of your window (on this INSIDE of your case), don’t make it super hard to do – but try to make it look good. Once you’re happy with your design ink it in with your nice black pen, once that is done masking tape everything else around your panel.
Put on your glasses now so you don’t mess up your eye sight!!
Start by drilling a hole in the part where you are going to cut out – this will be where we will start cutting from. When your cutting with your jigsaw be VERY careful, you could either cut something like your finger off or even worse mess up your modd!! Take the cutting slow to make sure it’s very clean and accurate.
Now you’ve cut out your window, sit back and have a pint of something good.
Get your sandpaper out and given the inside part of your window a quick sand to get rid of any really rough or sharp parts. After that is done get your edging material out, use A LOT more material than you think you need – more is better than less here. To hold it in place you can use some simple glue – I used super glue. Go around the outside of your window with this material making sure it looks nice and clean and you cover all of the inside with the panel, cut off any excess material and make sure the material is secure. Leave the glue to dry for a bit – go off and have another pint!
Next is adding your plexi glass, now what I do is go to my hardware store and ask for the specific size I want – they cut it so that it’s neat on the edges – when you cut it, it will look sh!te – trust me!. So measure the size your need TWICE and then get them to cut it for you, this is not going to break your bank doing this!!
To add the plexi to the case I’m going do it the way I made it – with glue and tape. On this INSDE of your case place the plexi over your window to make sure it fits right, then add some silicon glue (the reason I use this is because it will dry clear) don’t use too much cause you don’t want over-flow, with the glue down place your plexi on top gently and press down to make sure that the glue makes good contact with your plexi glass. Once the window is on place some strong tape on the edges of the window – make sure it can’t be seen – this will just make sure the window doesn’t go any where. Before you put it on your case again it is good practice to leave the glue to fully set for at least a few hours with some pressure on top of it – little brothers or sisters come in handy here, if you don’t have them you can always just use any thing heavy.
And that’s it, you’ve just make your first window – you can now see all the fun stuff in your computer and show off your lovely cabling skills and your lighting skills.
Have fun modding!
